Eligibility In synchronization with our local school districts, we require that students birth dates coordinate with the class to which they are applying. Therefore, children that turn two years old before September 1 are eligible for our Parent-Child program, or if they will be 3-5 years old by September 1, they will be eligible for our Preschool program. Registration for the upcoming school year begins in January. See Calendar for dates. Registration priority is given to returning students, siblings, alumni, and new families who have pre-registered. Cooperative schools are organized for parents who want to be involved in their child’s first educational experiences. Hobson is a wonderful community for your family because of the combined efforts from parents and the professional teaching staff. The time and energy that you give to Hobson is rewarding for your children and your family. Visitors have sometimes wondered how much parent volunteer time is required.
Here is an overview:
Parent-Child Class (2 year Old Children) A parent comes to each class with their child. One additional responsibility of the Parent-Child families is to purchase two tickets to Hobson’s annual Spring Social.
Preschool Classes (3-5 Year Old Children) There are one or two parent volunteers in class each day. The schedule gives each family equal opportunity to participate in the classroom. Parents are typically assigned to volunteer once every 4-6 weeks depending on the class size. We ask parents to please arrange for childcare for siblings. Because our community of families has the opportunity to get to know each other well, Hobson parents often swap childcare while they volunteer in class. Parents’ work and personal schedules are also taken into consideration when creating the parent volunteer schedule.
Additional responsibilities of the Preschool Class families include:
Participating on a committee. As a cooperative, parents have the opportunity to be involved firsthand in the operations of the school. Each committee position is important to the business and maintenance of the school. Hobson asks that one parent from each family devote approximately 20 hours to committee participation per year. Hobson is truly grateful that many parents willingly devote more time to their committees. Parents can request assignment to a particular committee of interest. Certain positions are appointed and approved by the membership, while others are assigned through a random lottery process based on parents’ preferences. If families have more than one child at Hobson, they are only asked to participate on one committee.
Joining one parent workday per year. We tend to our beloved school house and grounds during workdays that are held on several Saturday and Sunday afternoons a year.
Purchasing two tickets to Hobson’s annual Spring Social. Our annual Spring Social is a fun event for parents, alumni and friends of Hobson. The evening includes a dinner, silent auction, and live auction.
Working one shift at a fundraising event. Volunteer shifts are generally 3 hours in length and allow you to work alongside other families at an event of your choice.
Working together, families build relationships with each other while caring for our school.
